Leader Member Exchange Theory Leadership Essay - 1430 Words

QN. 1 Leader-member Exchange Theory Leader-member exchange (LMX) is a theory that describes the roles and relationships that developed over a period of time between a leader and his or her subordinates (Yukl, (2013). In other words, as the leader interacts with subordinates, a mutual relationship that defines roles is developed. Every leader at some point develops a core number of trusted assistants, advisors and lieutenants that they can call upon to perform critical tasks. So this calls for high dependability, compatibility, trust, and competency on the part of the subordinates (Yukl, 2013). As the leader continues to exchange with the subordinates, â€Å"trust, loyalty, and support† develops and behavior gets reinforced (Yukl, 2013 p.222). A leader influences a follower by this close exchange and task-delegation. The follower become one of the inner circle employees and thus gets more authority in the eyes of the other team members. He or she is trusted by the leader and ge ts more important responsibilities. When important team decisions are necessary, the follower is the first to sell it and support the leader. A follower gets more crucial information from the leader sooner than the rest through the exchange. The employee also becomes more hard-working and shows loyalty, ending up with volunteering for harder and important responsibilities. A follower like that will end up getting promoted when an opportunity arises.
